Rocky was my little bundle of joy and inspiration. He was born in a dumpster behind our office. One morning he was found in the mouth of a big dog, an Akita, with all of his litter mates killed and his mother, a beautiful long haired gray feral cat, missing. The listless kitten was placed in a box on my desk.
Much to the surprise of everyone, including our veterinarian ( who said he would always be a feral cat) Rocky grew from that 4 week old clump of wild hair and blue eyes into the most loving, fun and interactive cat I’ve ever known. We named him Rocky from the Beatles song “Rocky Raccoon” because of his black and white markings, but also because he had such a rocky start of life.
Every day was an adventure for Rocky, climbing into every open drawer, bag or box he could find, initiating hide and go seek with me or jumping in my bicycle basket to go for a ride down the street. Whenever I changed the sheets on the bed he would come running into the room jump on the bed sliding under the sheets turning over with all four paws in the air kicking at the sheets that I pulled tight around him. He learned to hit the speed dial button on her bedside phone as a good way to get our attention (which worked by the way.) Many of our friends and family received a late night call from Rocky interrupting their sleep.
This furry companion brought years of love, laughter and friendship to our home and was also the best buddy of our elder cat Snowball in his last several years. Each morning I awoke with Rocky sitting on my chest, licking my eyelids or just staring inches from my face.
In the end sadly, his adventures of tasting everything that was brought into the house led to his demise at a too early age of twelve. He was my best friend, always there in the room interacting with me no matter what I was doing. I miss him and will always have a warm spot in my heart when I think of him. Rocky taught me that every road is an adventure.
For now, Rocky Road Adventures is a pathway to my writing endeavors, but who knows what the adventures might lead to. Anyone who knows me expects a surprise as I have reinvented myself several times.
So here’s to the future and all the adventures that it might bring.
Thank you Rocky for your inspiration and to all my friends for your support.
Here we go!
